Advanced Facultative Pond

Advanced facultative ponds are the first step in advanced integrated wastewater pond (AIWP) systems. They consist of a conventional facultative pond, containing a digestion pit on its bottom, where solids are trapped and transformed into methane by anaerobic digestion. The surface aerobic layer is about 1 meter deep and helps reducing potential odour problems. Biogas may be collected using a submerged gas canopy and potentially used for energy production.
