As defined by the Joint WHO & UNICEF Monitoring Programme (JMP), an improved drinking-water source is one that by the nature of its construction adequately protects the source from outside contamination, in particular with faecal matter. These include: Piped water connection into dwelling, yard or plot; Public tap or standpipe; tube well or borehole; protected dug well; protected spring; rainwater collection.
